So you have attempted to go on a diet for the dozenth time but you failed yet once again. Why do people have so much trouble losing weight? Why can’t we commit to why we have decided to do? There clearly are others who succeed. So why can’t you do it? You know it has to do with your willpower… why can’t you just have that “let’s do it! attitude” with you after day-2? Most of us have been there and here are some of the top reasons why we fail.

Lack of WillpowerLet’s face it. When most of us attempt something new, in this case going on diet, we start because we have been motivated by something. Maybe you saw the finale of the Biggest Loser and got inspired, or you looked at the mirror and committed to yourself that this has to stop. Whatever your motivation to start was, you just have this urge to change. You feel great thinking “you can do this!” while a burst of energetic aura swirls around you. However, after day-2, this aura shines less bright. On day-3, there’s no more light coming out from the aura. On day-4 you start becoming lazy and skip a day. On day-5 you adjust back to the normal life you are used to and think everything is OK and that nobody would care anyway.. so you stop going on diet. Why can’t we just keep that “day-1″ attitude with us until we succeed? It’s just part of human nature. When you face the truth, whether it be the the pain of refraining from your favorite desserts or eating vegetables while your family is eating rare slices of meat, you start to slowly get upset, anxious and build up a negative attitude because you get desperate. You get desperate because you do not see immediate results and it seems as if the whole world is turning against you when you only attempted to do something good for yourself. This is the biggest truth. You can accomplish almost anything with a dedicated mindset and willpower. But it isn’t easy. You can commit but keeping that commitment is one of the biggest challenge humans face.

Eating Whenever You WantThis relates to the previous reason: lack of willpower. You just eat anything when you want and make yourself feel comfortable. You need to set estimated times of the day to eat only during those times. Because if you don’t, you will just eat and eat whenever you feel like and again, you are not showing any willpower to refrain from eating or “change”. Instead, you are slowly erasing the term “willpower” from your mind and inserting the term “comfort” and “satisfaction” into your brain. If you cannot control the times when you eat, you can satiate the moment, but you cannot satiate your future when you finally wake up from your comforting life. Thus, if you become too comfortable with yourself in a daily basis, it becomes harder to make a full commitment later on. Start changing your habits slowly. You should slowly build up your willpower and commitment to succeed by applying some constraints such as eating only during set times at home, so you can not only go on a better diet but slowly change yourself into a committing person.

Not Having A Positive AttitudeYou might ask that changing your habits such as eating only during set times is dumb or that it might not even be worth it. But what if you did give it a try without any negative thoughts towards it? Why not just “give in” to yourself and give it a try with a positive attitude. It’s because like this famous quote: “I think, therefore I am”, people think and have opinions. And these thoughts and opinions become negative when you don’t think you can do something. And when you have more negative thoughts, you generally start to see more and more things negatively even before experiencing something. But you have to let this go. You have to realize that people cannot read your minds. It is only you who can see through your own mind. Why would you want to cluster your mind with negative thoughts that other people cannot see? You are just denying yourself from things you could do and achieve. Therefore, why not try out new habits at home with a positive attitude and not even question or feel negative towards why you are even doing it. In the end you know you want to lose weight but you just don’t know when to start. You then end up thinking that this is how you are and you can live with it. But instead of denying yourself from change, why not just start very small habits at home such as eating during set times, drinking water instead of soda and refraining from calorie fat snacks in a positive attitude. It will not only pursue your goals slowly and build your willpower, but you start to gain control of your life.
